Incorporating your partner in you workouts to achieve results

COUPLES who sweat together stay together. Gisel Harrow, personal trainer and fitness expert at Express Fitness, Liguanea, said that apart from the associated health benefits, motivation, and accountability that come with couples working out together, many couples also grow closer.

“Finding motivation to exercise can be tiring and takes much discipline, but working out with your significant other means that you can be supportive of each other’s goals, and it easily gives a sense of satisfaction and rewarding feeling both to your fitness goals and your relationship,” Harrow reasoned.

She said that couples can do almost anything together, from going for a run or hitting the gym, to a set of exercise routines designed for couples.

These include:

Step drills or sprints

This is where couples use the tag method and time themselves. So whether you are going to run up a flight of stairs or sprint for a short distance, both standing at opposite ends, run as fast as you can and touch the other. Repeat this for a timed period.


Using weights or just body weight, face each other, lower your body to a 90-degree angle keeping your knees behind your toes, then go back to a stand. Do four sets of 15-20 repetitions.

Sit ups

Lie on your backs with your feet touching each other while keeping your knees upright. Come up to a full sit, reach and touch each other’s hands, and return to start. Do three to four sets of 20 repetitions.

Push ups

With both of you on the ground, face each other or go side by side. Go into a plank position, lower chests to the ground, bending the elbows. Each time you come up you could aim for a high five. Repeat this for about 10 repetitions. There is also an alternative method where you can have your partner stand over you and place their hands on your upper back. This will create a slight resistance. Switch places after suggested repetitions.

Harrow warned, however, that support has to be central to couples’ exercise because unhealthy habits such as competing, one beginning to act like the personal trainer, and passing rude or discouraging comments, can easily sneak in. Instead she said that couples should try to make the routine fun and exciting and keep focused on goals that were previously decided on.
